Henan, the home of many heritage sites

Henan means “south of the Yellow River”. The Yellow River flows across eight cities in Henan province, stretches for 711 kilometers. The province is in the central part of China and covers a large part of the fertile and densely populated North China Plain. It is the third-most populous province with a population of over 94 million.

Henan is one of the birthplaces of Chinese civilization. With over 3,200 years of recorded history, and remained China’s cultural, economic and political center until approximately 1,000 years ago.

Henan Province is home to many heritage sites, including five world cultural heritage sites, the ruins of Shang dynasty capital city Yin, 4 of the 8 Great Ancient Capitals of China, the Longmen Grottoes in Luoyang, the Henan section of the Silk Road and the Grand Canal, the Shaolin Temple. The practice of Taichi also began in Henan.
