Chinese President Xi Jinping emphasized ecological development in southwestern Tibet Autonomous Region and called for concrete efforts to build a united, wealthy and modern socialist Tibet.

Xi Jinping, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, made the comments at a two-day high-level meeting on Tibet work, which ended in Beijing on Saturday.

Reiterating the central government’s consistent support to Tibet, Xi termed the protection of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau’s ecological environment as the greatest contribution to the survival and development of the Chinese nation. He urged officials to prioritize the construction of ecological civilization.

Xi called for upholding the vision that “lucid waters and lush mountains are invaluable assets,” advocating harmonious coexistence between humans and nature, and sticking to the path of green and sustainable development.

Noting the imbalances and inadequacies in national development, Xi called for more efforts in the construction of border areas with enough policy support, so as to strive for greater progress and cementing the current achievements in poverty alleviation.

Moreover, Xi highlighted infrastructural development in the region, stressing the need to push forward development to create more jobs and improve people’s livelihood.

Efforts must be made to build a new modern socialist Tibet that is united, prosperous, culturally advanced, harmonious and beautiful, Xi said, underscoring the CPC leadership, the system of socialism with Chinese characteristics and the system of regional ethnic autonomy must be upheld to carry out work related to Tibet.

Relevant CPC’s policies on governing Tibet for a new era have taken shape since the 18th CPC National Congress in 2012.

The Chinese president also reiterated national unification as the foundation of all the work carried out in Tibet. People of all ethnic groups should jointly fight against separatist forces, he said, expecting increased communication and exchange between different ethnic groups.

Furthermore, Xi applauded the progress made by cadres from different ethnic groups in Tibet, saying the practice has proved the effectiveness of the central government’s policies on the region’s development.

Rapid and sustainable development of Tibet is a great contribution to the Party and the country’s national development, said Xi, calling on cadres in Tibet to overcome hardships and devote themselves to the development of Tibet with a strong sense of responsibility.

As of January this year, Tibet has basically eradicated absolute poverty with a total of 628,000 people and 74 county-level regions lifted out of poverty, according to data from the autonomous region’s government.
