Beautiful Tourist Destination : “Caves of a Thousand Buddhas”- Dunhuang, China
Dunhuang is a city in Northwestern Gansu Province in China, with a population of 191,800. The city was a major hub of commerce of the Silk Road from 6th century to 13th century.
The early Buddhist monks arrived from West by 1st century and a sizable Buddhist community developed in Dunhuang. The caves carved out by the monks, originally used for meditation, then a place of worship and pilgrimage called the Mogao Caves or “Caves of a Thousand Buddhas.” The caves contain some finest examples of Buddhist art, murals and the hoard of manuscripts spanning a period of 1,000 years. The manuscripts include excerpts from a Christian Bible dating to the Yuan Dynasty.
The Mogao Caves were listed World Heritage Site in 1987 by UNESCO.
